The Accelerating Effect of Manganous Ions on Phage Action
نویسندگان
چکیده
Dilute solutions of MnCl(2) or MnSO(4) accelerate the lytic effect of phage upon susceptible staphylococci. Under the conditions of our experiments the manganese-containing mixtures lysed regularly 0.5 hour sooner than the controls. The effect is shown to be due to a lowering of the lytic threshold, i.e. the quantity of phage/bacterium requisite for lysis; Mn(++) reduces the ratio from 54 to about 12. In the presence of Mn(++) phage distribution is altered and in growing phage-bacteria mixtures the extracellular phage concentration is increased by manganese to approximately 4 times that occurring in the absence of manganese. There appears to be no enhancement of phage formation nor any affect on the rate of bacterial growth. As would be anticipated, for any given initial phage concentration the end titre after completion of lysis is less in the presence of manganese than in its absence. This is due to the reduced lytic threshold produced by Mn(++), there consequently being less phage needed to bring about lytic destruction of the bacteria.

Synergistic bactericidal activity of a naturally isolated phage and ampicillin against urinary tract infecting Escherichia coli O157
Objective(s): Bacteriophages are infectious replicating entities that are under consideration as antimicrobial bioagents to control bacterial infections. As an alternative or supplement to antibiotics, bacteriophages can be used to circumvent the resistance to existing antibiotics. The aim of this study was to assess the synergistic effect of a naturally isolated phage...
متن کاملRole of metal ions in reactions catalyzed by pig heart triphosphopyridine nucleotide-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase. II. Effect on catalytic properties and reactivity of amino acid residues.
The TPN-specific isocitrate dehydrogenase of pig heart, which is here shown not to contain zinc or manganese as essential constituents, is most effectively activated by divalent manganous ions. On the basis of the effect of isocitrate concentration on the apparent Michaelis constant for manganous ion and the reciprocal influence of manganous ion concentration on the apparent Michaelis constant ...

In order to study of the effect of priming and salinity on physiological and chemical characteristics of wheat(Triticum aestivum L.), an experiment was carried out at the Experimental Farm of Shiraz University. Results showedthat primed plants significantly reduced its gas exchanges by accelerating senescence under a series of salt stress, which became more serious along with the increasing of s...
متن کاملEffect of air ions on submicron t1 bacteriophage aerosols.
The effect of a high concentration of ionized air molecules on sampling T1 phage aerosols of submicron particle size was evaluated by comparing the phage recoveries of all-glass impingers (AGI-4) and type 6 filter papers. Sampler recoveries of all ionized aerosols were less than the recoveries of nonionized control aerosols. These reductions in recovery were greater with positive ions than with...
متن کاملEffect of Isolated Specific Lytic Phage against Growth and Biofilm Inhibition of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis Isolated from Decayed Dental Plaque
Background and purpose: Despite advances in oral health and dental industry, tooth decay remains one of the most common oral diseases. One of the new methods to combat dental plaque, which is the main cause of caries, is using specific lytic bacteriophage. This study aimed to investigate the effect of isolated specific lytic phage against growth and biofilm inhibition of Streptococcus mutans an...
